Community Classes

HCM offers Community Classes to promote well being, socialization, and quality-of-life programs at reasonable fees. We partner with local instructors to offer classes at various sites in the Highlands community.  We also offer free wellness programs (see further down).

Class sessions run for 8 weeks for $40 per session from September through June (some classes may continue through summer).  Some Tai Chi classes are free, being offered through our Senior Outreach Program.  However, beginning Tai Chi classes are first required in order to enroll in these ongoing free classes.  Beginning Tai Chi classes are offered 2-3 times per year at the $40 rate.

Vinyasa Yoga with Sharon Weis

Vinyasa is a style of yoga characterized by stringing postures together so that you move from one to another, seamlessly, using breath. It is commonly referred to as “flow” yoga. Because the challenging poses are done in quick succession, Vinyasa yoga helps build muscle strength while improving your fitness.

Sharon offers 8 week sessions between Sept. and May, and one 4-week session in June, with July and August being off for the summer. You can try out the first class to see if it’s right for you and if not, you won’t be charged. Session payment due by the end of the first class. You can call Sharon directly at 502/939-2895 for more information. Click here to view our event calendar for open class registration.

2 locations: Thursdays at Strathmoor Presbyterian Church and Mondays at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Tai Chi Yang Family Style

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that today is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing.

Free ongoing Tai Chi classes are held Monday and Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings. In order to attend, beginning classes need to be completed and cost $40 for an 8-week session. Beginning classes are offered 2-3 times per year in the spring and fall. For Fall 2021, classes are hopeful to begin in late Sept. or early Oct., but depends on the state of the pandemic. Painting with Watercolors

Watercolor is a simple medium, made with pigment and gum arabic, and is applied with a brush and water to white paper, resulting in a purity and clarity unmatched by other painting media. Despite, or perhaps because of, its simplicity, watercolor paints can be subtle or glowingly expressive.

Dan Church has retired from teaching the HCM watercolor classes. We are seeking a new instructor.

Classes are held once a week, for $40 for an 8-week session. Location: HCM 1228 E. Breckinridge St., 40204

Free Wellness Programs

HCM offers free wellness programs to help with some everyday needs, socialization, support, and some specific issues. We partner with local professionals who bring their expertise to these sessions.

Practical Education Classes

Budgeting, nutrition and meal planning, how things work and using today’s electronic tools are just a few things you will learn in this 4-month program, as well as some fun and socialization. Learn skills to help you and your family manage important life changes.
