HCM is an interfaith, non-profit organization uniting the efforts and energies of 17 congregations to support and empower our Highlands neighbors in need. We serve residents in zip codes 40204 and 40205 (and with the closure of the South East Area Ministry we also serve a portion of 40218). As a proud part of the Association of Community Ministries and the sister ministries it represents, we work to create positive change for Louisville at large.
For more than five decades, HCM has been a collaboration of concerned neighbors helping to enhance the community at large. While our roots stretch back into the late 1960s, HCM was officially incorporated in 1970 to represent a network of interfaith congregations. Through HCM, these congregations come together to offer the broadest possible resources to all segments of our community—children, families, and seniors.
We are supported through the combined efforts and financial support of an interfaith network of congregations in the Highlands, governmental agencies, community grants and the personal donations of neighbors and local businesses.
Throughout our long legacy of community development, our approach has remained the same. We believe in a dynamic, evolving, shared-responsibility approach to supporting others. Our interfaith unity drives action—and creates a stronger, more empowered community experience for all.
History of Eastern Star Court
In 2026, as Highlands Community Ministries prepared to celebrate the 40th anniversary of our Eastern Star Court campus, we began researching the history of the property and the people connected to it. What started as a commemorative project became an opportunity to more deeply understand the complex history of a place that continues to serve children and families today.
The resulting historical document traces the story of the property across generations, including the lives of those who owned the home, worked on the grounds, and shaped the surrounding neighborhood. As part of that research, we also learned that one of the property’s former owners participated in the slave trade, and we acknowledge that enslaved people lived and labored on this property against their will.
We believe caring for a community also means being honest about its history. By sharing this research publicly, we hope to honor the full story of this place while reaffirming our commitment to dignity, inclusion, and neighborly care for all people.
