Lenten Lunches
Join HCM for lunch on Thursdays during Lent as local Highlands Ministers share devotions and examine our spiritual journeys. The one-hour program rotates between several HCM congregations; schedules are available in early spring. Check for updates on this website, the HCM Facebook page or in your church newsletter for details on this year.
Lent, in the Christian church, is a period of penitential preparation for Easter. In Western churches it begins on Ash Wednesday, six and a half weeks before Easter, and provides for a 40-day fast in imitation of Jesus Christ’s fasting in the wilderness before he began his public ministry.
Seder Dinner at Passover
HCM hosts a Seder Dinner that includes reading, drinking wine, telling stories, eating special foods, singing, and other Passover traditions. Check for updates on this website, the HCM Facebook page or in your church newsletter on details for this year.
Per Biblical command, the Seder is held after nightfall on the second night of Passover, the anniversary of the Jewish exodus from Egyptian slavery more than 3,000 years ago. The Seder dinner includes:
- four cups of wine.
- veggies dipped in saltwater.
- flat, dry cracker-like bread called matzah
- bitter herbs, often horseradish (without additives) and romaine lettuce, dipped into charoset (a paste of nuts, apples, pears and wine).
- a festive meal that may contain time-honored favorites, like chicken soup and gefilte fish.
Each item has its place in a 15-step choreographed combination of tastes, sounds, sensations, and smells that have been with the Jewish people for millennia.

Empty Bowls
Empty Bowls is our big fundraiser of the year. Hand-thrown pottery bowls and a simple meal of soup, bread, cheese, and fruit stand as a reminder that many of our neighbors suffer from food insecurity. Proceeds from the event go to support HCM’s food pantry and senior nutrition programs.
Bottomless bowls of delicious soups, local hand-crafted pottery bowls, a raffle of theme baskets by our Member Congregations, and a small silent auction of “top-shelf” items add to the simple meal of soup rounded out with Artisan bread, cheese, fruit, desserts, and beverages. Sure to be a fun-filled event!
Check our Calendar for the event date and details, or our Facebook page, or your church newsletter for dates and details this year’s Empty Bowls event.
